31st August 2009 "MOUNTAIN PATROL"

From the movie with title "mountain patrol" here i learn something about appreciation on enviroment. The messages from the story is based on true story which happened in china. Obviously, from the story it tells about the changes of life in that part of area from grassland into desert, strong culture believes and most importantly about legal way of getting money.

We are so lucky to live in Brunei, small country with small amount of populations, good economy and strict goverment policy. From small country and small amount of population, the goverment can encourge to improved the quality of life of the population. The goverment strongly protect the forest and instinct animals.Different from the movie, peoples lives in poverty and struggled to improves their life. by hunting animals for living, selling animal pelts and cutting down the trees for making money. The money is used to buy shelters, food, petrol etc. by all this, huge changes on the enviroment clearly seen. KEKEXILI is reserved area where all the rare animals are found. The place where actually grassland but have become desert due to deforestation and legal porchering. They are not just lost the beauty of the nature but also the economy problems. Here we should understand that the enviroment is important to us,from beauty to economy. Like in Brunei, the thick forest and the animals are the one of the source of economy. We should protect what we have not to destroy but to protect it for good income.

From the movie itself shows the strong culture of people living there. At the beginning of the movie shows people feeding birds with human corpse. Every villagers corpses are not buried but being chopped and feed to birds. what i understand about this,is because there is no suitable land to buried the corpses which is desert area. Also, from my point of view they might believes that by feeding the corpse to birds might help the birds to survives and how they appriciate the nature.

Overall, From poverty and less attention from the goverment causes legal porchering and deforestation. They sells the woods and pelts to get money. They killed big amount of antelopes and other animals for pelts for sell to other country overseas. This activities happened for years which the effects was clearly seen. The tibetan also trying to protect the animal and stop the porchering activites even they have to died in the missions. Even some of them actually have a good work but for they culture and they love to nature they join the patrol to stop the prochering activities. Here shows how strong their cultural believes.

In conclusion, from the story of "mountain patrol" the goverment should also give more attention to rural area not just to urban area. Support the rural area peoples to improve their life equally. Stop all the legal activites that happened in rural area. We should take note and learn from it. Save and appriciate our forest and animals for the next young generation by not destroying them. The parent should teach their children how to appriciate the nature since they early age. by then, generation to generation we still have something to be proud of.

what i learned from the trip to wasan padi area?

PUNCTUAL AND RESPONSIBLE.

This my first time joining the trip with BEACA. Eventhough the trip is quite short and such in a hurry that we have to be back to ubd because some of us will having class at 10 am. But from this short trip i taught me many things. first it taught me to be punctual and responsible to the job given. that i have to woke up early 4.30 a.m to get ready and to catch a bus before it left at 6.00 a.m.

PATIENCE AND APPRECIATE.

From the trip, it also taught me to be patience. When i can only get less than 10gram for an hour. this patience benefit me to work harder next time in every job given. On the other hand, it taught me to appreciate the rice that we eat everyday.

17th of august 2009. harvesting padi at wasan padi area. by Md Azmey

Yesterday,it was my first trip with BEACA . we are told to come before 6 a.m. I have to woke up early at 4.30 to pack up my stuff and took 30 minutes to reached the assamble area that was at shibie parking area. As the bus arrived, we left ubd around 6.00a.m and it took less than 30minutes to reach kg.wasan.

As we arrived at wasan padi area,we can see almost 2km per square of the area were covered by padi. we entered half kilometere of wasan padi area by bus before reaching the actual place. The padi area were we're visiting was belonged to Haji Mohammad Ali bin Bakar. we're welcome by one of the worker named hadi and he is indonesian. we were given a short brief about the equipment used during cutting the padi. At first, we were asked to used boots and gloves and bring along a penknife.

The experience started when we walk through the slippery narrow pathway that we must walk very carefully or we may get slip off. while walking through the path way i saw long plastic with 1feet in height that covering the padi. As told by hadi, the plastic are used to prevent mouse form entering the padi area. then we enter the padi area and started to experiencing how to cut padi traditionally. Basically,we are told that from sewing the padi until it can be harvested, only took 3 month 10 days. we can see form its colour.when it's yellow that mean it ready to be harvested. but as added by Haji Mohammad Ali,it's better to cut down the padi when it is greenish yellow. because it made the padi taste more sweeter.

Harvesting padi was not really hard than i expected. It only need the patience to do it. this feelings come when i can only get a full small plastic bag (because i dont have basket which also called "takinding")within an hour with sweat all over the face. the small plastic bag that i used is only equal to 5gram of padi. how small the amount is?

There was also equipment used to scared the bird. it was rope with cans and leaves hanging on that tied from the rest house to the pose at every corner of the padi area. The worker just pull the rope from the rest house and make sounds that scare the bird. As mention by Haji Mohammad Ali about the used of fake human figure standing at the padi area was no longer affective since it doesnt move.the birds are not scared away.

After an hour harvesting padi then we back to the rest place and have some breakfast. Then we pack our stuff and ready to go back to ubd.
